When the air conditioning system is operating in cooling mode in summer months, the energy that would have been rejected to atmosphere is used to heat the hot water instead. In this way, the hot water demand is met in summer months and supplemented for the remainder of the year by heat pumps. When the AC system is not in operation, or is in full heating mode, the recovery box will work as a standard heat pump which at a minimum is 65% more efficient than standard electrical heating. In addition, the hot water design incorporates a single hot water cylinder with variable hot water loop. A thermostatic valve is installed to ensure that the temperature is always maintained in the loop while only circulating the minimum amount of water required – resulting in reduced standing & circulation losses when used in conjunction with highly efficient pipework & insulation.

The 50kWp PV system will be provided via 90 PV modules installed on the building’s roof. Energy provided by the PV system will be used to feed any available loads, with surplus energy used to charge lithium-Ion batteries. Each dwelling will be provided with a battery back-up system comprising of at least 15kWh battery autonomy.
